Heater Core: Service and Repair

Heater Assembly Removal






1. Remove the instrument panel Service and Repairand lay it on the front seat.
2. Remove the RH instrument panel brace located above the heater case and attached to the cowl.
3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system and remove the hoses from the heater core. Plug the hoses and core.
4. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose (black) from the in-line vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.
5. Disconnect the blower motor wire harness from the resistor and motor lead.
6. Working under the hood, remove three nuts retaining the heater assembly to the dash panel.
7. In the passenger compartment, remove the screw attaching the heater assembly support bracket to the cowl top panel.
8. Remove one screw retaining the bracket below the heater assembly to the dash panel.
9. Carefully pull the heater assembly away from the dash panel and remove the heater assembly from vehicle.

Installation

1. Position the heater assembly in the vehicle. Install the screw attaching the heater assembly support bracket to the cowl top panel.
2. Working under the hood install three nuts retaining the heater assembly to the dash panel.
3. Install one screw to retain the bracket below the heater assembly to the dash panel.
4. Connect the blower motor and the harness to the re8istor and blower motor lead.
5. Connect the black vacuum supply hose to the vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.
6. Install RH instrument panel brace.
7. Install the instrument panel.
8. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core and fill the cooling system.
9. Check heater operation.

Heater Core

Removal

1. Carefully remove the heater assembly as outlined.
2. Remove four heater core access cover attaching screws and remove the access cover from the case.
3. Remove the seal from the heater core tubes.






4. Pull the heater core from the case

Installation

1. Inspect the heater core sealer in the heater case. Replace, if necessary with Ford Caulking Cord, AZ-1 9560-A, or equivalent.
2. Install the heater core in the case with the seals on the outside of the case.
3. Install the heater core tube seal on the heater core tubes.
4. Position the heater core access cover and seal on the case and install the four attaching screws.
5. Install the heater assembly as outlined.
