Article No. 88-15-5
FORD: 1988 FESTIVA 1989 PROBE
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 TRACER
ISSUE: Inoperative windshield wipers may be caused by the wiper arm coming loose at the wiper pivot shaft joint. Loss of torque at the wiper pivot shaft joint could strip the wiper arm splines under certain load conditions such as snow or ice build-up.
ACTION: To correct this, reinstall the windshield wiper arm using the following service procedure.
NOTE: WIPER ARMS WITH STRIPPED SPLINES MAY BE REUSED.
1. Remove the wiper arm attachment nut.
NOTE: CLEAN ANY METAL LEFT BETWEEN WIPER ARM SPLINES AND PIVOT SHAFT.
FIGURE 13:
2. Reindex the windshield wiper arm to the pivot shaft.
NOTE: MAKE SURE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM IS HORIZONTAL TO THE PIVOT SHAFT SO THE PIVOT SHAFT SPLINES ARE FULLY SEATED IN THE WIPER ARM, FIGURE 13.
3. Tighten the wiper arm attachment nut to a torque of 7-10 lbs. ft. (10-14 N-m).
4. Cycle the wipers several times and then torque the wiper arm attachment nut again.
