LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 TRACER

ISSUE: A new rear, heated backlite service kit with improved defroster performance is available for 1987 (Canadian) and 1988 (U.S.) Tracer vehicles built before 08/20/87.

ACTION: To improve defroster performance, install a new heated backlite service kit which has a relocated bus bar. Refer to the following service procedure.

Figure 2:

1. Disconnect heated backlite connectors, Figure 2.

2. Replace heated backlite with new, heated backlite. Refer to the appropriate Tracer Shop Manual, Section 43-05.

3. Remove liftgate trim panel.

4. Remove and throw away the driver's side, heated backlite wire. Save the self-tapping screw. Route the new wire with eyelet through the clip and attach with the self-tapping screw, Figure 2.

5. Remove and scrap the passenger's side, heated backlite wire by cutting the wire about two (2) inches from where the wire comes out of the harness, Figure 2.

6. Install new wire with the butt splice connector to the cut wire coming from the harness.

7. Reconnect new connectors to the new, heated backlite.

8. Check continuity of heated backlite system by turning system switch to "ON" position. If indicator light on instrument panel lights, continuity is good. If light fails to illuminate, make sure wires and connectors are secure and repeat this step.

9. Reinstall liftgate trim panel and fasteners. Make sure new wires are properly tucked behind trim panel.

10. Install two (2) wire retainers by removing part of the seam welt just below the package tray tether attachment. Remove paper from adhesive on retainer and install retainer about two (2) inches below package tray tether. Reinstall seam welt and attach wires.
