Subject: Dealer Service Action 87S26 - Certain 1988 Tracer Vehicles for Replacement of the Automatic Transmission Selector Lever Handle

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1988 Tracer vehicles built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from the start of production (August 7, 1986) through February 5, 1987 and equipped with automatic transmissions.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT:

Ford Motor Company has determined that potentially defective transmission selector lever handles may have been installed on the subject vehicles. The affected units were built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from the start of production (August 7, 1986) through February 5, 1987. On some of these vehicles, the floor-mounted selector lever release button may stick in the depressed (released) position. The condition would allow movement of the lever from the "park" or another selected position without depressing the thumb actuated release mechanism. This creates the possibility that the park mechanism could be disengaged accidentally, for example, by bumping the selector lever.

To correct this condition, a new selector lever handle is to be installed on each of the affected vehicles.
DEALER OBLIGATIONS:

Because the program is being conducted before the vehicles are invoiced or authorized for delivery, it will be handled as a dealer service program and no owner letters will be sent. It is, therefore, essential that no vehicles are demonstrated or delivered until this service action is completed. If you are aware of any uncorrected units of the affected population that may be in owners' hands, you are to contact the owner and promptly arrange to have the unit corrected.

For Dealers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands - to determine if a vehicle is eligible, you may wish to utilize the CARES system.

If no vehicle listing is enclosed, you are not involved at this time, and this Dealer Bulletin is for information only.
