Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair


1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then drain transaxle fluid.
2. Remove valve body as described under ``Valve Body, Replace.''
3. Remove left front wheel and tire assembly.
4. Remove left hand ball joint to steering knuckle attaching bolt, then pull lower control arm downward to separate ball joint from steering knuckle.

5. Using a suitable pry bar, separate halfshaft from differential side gear, Fig. 6. Suspend halfshaft from coil spring using wire. When inserting pry bar use care not to damage oil seal.

6. Loosen band anchor bolt and locknut, Fig. 7, then remove band strut.

7. Using a C-clamp and socket, compress servo piston, then using a screwdriver, remove servo snap ring, Fig. 8.



8. Carefully loosen C-clamp, then remove servo retainer, piston and spring.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Prior to installation, lubricate servo piston with Dexron Type II fluid. When installing band anchor end bolt, tighten bolt to 8.7 to 10.8 ft. lbs., then loosen bolt three turns. While holding anchor end bolt in position, torque locknut to 41 to 59 ft. lbs. When installing halfshaft, use nut circlip. While supporting at constant velocity joint, slid halfshaft into transaxle until circlip engages differential side gear groove. Torque lower ball joint to steering knuckle attaching bolt to 32 to 40 ft. lbs.
