Alternator Removal and Installation - Manual Revision

ALTERNATOR - 1.6L EFI - VEHICLES WITH FACTORY INSTALLED AIR CONDITIONING - REVISED SHOP MANUAL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TRACER

ISSUE: The alternator removal and installation procedure as published in the Tracer Shop Manual, Section 31-10-1 has been revised for vehicles with factory installed air conditioning. The low pressure line going to the A/C evaporator restricts the removal of the alternator.

ACTION: If service is required, loosen the alternator support brackets, disconnect the electrical connector to the number one injector and rotate the injector out of the way. Refer to the following procedure for detailed service information.

Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Pull the rubber boot away "B" terminal located on the backside of the alternator, Figure 6.

3. "B" terminal nut and remove wire. Remove remaining alternator wiring connectors.

4. Loosen and remove alternator adjusting bolt.
5. Loosen alternator pivot bolt and remove alternator belt.

6. Remove alternator pivot bolt and set alternator down.

7. Loosen and remove upper support-to-adjusting bracket bolt, Figure 6.

8. Loosen other upper support bracket bolt at engine block and move bracket aside.

9. Loosen adjusting bracket bolt at front of engine and move adjusting bracket down and aside.

10. Remove harness connector from number one injector, Figure 7.

11. Rotate injector up and away, Figure 7.

12. Remove alternator.
Installation

1. Position alternator.

2. Reposition injector to the original location.

3. Connect harness to the number one injector.

4. Reposition adjusting bracket and tighten adjusting bolt at front of engine.

5. Reposition other upper support bracket and tighten bolt at engine block.

6. Install upper support-to-adjusting bracket bolt, Figure 6.

7. Position alternator and install alternator pivot bolt.

8. Install alternator belt.

9. Install alternator adjusting bolt.

10. Adjust alternator belt and tighten alternator pivot bolt and adjusting bolt.

11. Install alternator wire onto "B" terminal and install nut. Install remaining alternator wiring connectors.

12. Reposition the rubber boot on the "B" terminal located on the backside of the alternator.

13. Connect negative battery cable.
