Subject:

Safety Recall 89S62 - Certain 1988 Mercury Tracer Cars for Inspection and, if Necessary, Replacement of Front Lap-Shoulder Belts

Affected Vehicles

Certain 1988 Mercury Tracer cars (3 door, 5-door and station wagons) built from June 10, 1987 through May 31, 1988 at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant.

Reasons For Recall

Tracer cars are equipped with front lap-shoulder belt retractors that are both webbing speed and inertia sensitive. On some of these cars, the front lap-shoulder belt can lock at slow belt pull out rates. In most cases, the reactor will release the belt when the pulling motion is stopped and tension on the belt is removed. The belt can then be pulled out slowly. However, this condition may happen repeatedly and, therefore, some people may become discouraged from using the seat belt. In a few cases, the belt may lock and become impossible to use.

To correct this condition, driver and passenger front lap-shoulder belts that lock at slow belt pull out rates, or are difficult to extract, are to be inspected and if necessary, replaced.
