Safety Recall 89S62

1988 Tracer Front Lap-Shoulder Belts

Technical Instructions

Inspection

If owners are experiencing difficulty in using their front lap-shoulder belts, inspect the driver and passenger belts to confirm that they have not been previously replaced. The seat belt tag contains the necessary information for this inspection (production date code is week/day/year). Original Bendix production belts are date coded 10187 thru 20288.

NOTE:
Belts that have been previously replaced or have different production date codes are not included in this recall.

If the inspection determines that the car is equipped with original Bendix belt assemblies, check the belts by pulling them out of the retractor at a normal speed and with a steady motion. If the belts function normally, the seat belts are performing properly and need not be replaced.

The locking mechanism in the Tracer seat belt retractor is webbing speed and inertia sensitive. If its been determined that the belts work normally and do not require replacement, show owners how to pull belt out of its retractor using normal, slow speed and a steady motion. Quick jerks will only cause the belt to lock-up.

If the belts lock or are extremely difficult to extract, replace the belts.

Replacement

Follow the installation instructions provided with the new seat belt assembly.
