ISSUE: A rough idle or hard starting condition may be caused by an open circuit inside the main relay connector. Water entering the connector causes rust to form on the terminals inside the connector which results in an open circuit.

ACTION: Remove the main relay connector from the wire harness and connect the wires with butt splice connectors. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Locate the main relay on the left hand fender apron near the air intake filter.

2. Cut the wires on both sides of the main relay connector, Figure 1.

3. Throw away the main relay connector.

4. Strip away 7.6 mm (0.3") of insulation from each wire.

5. Install a waterproof butt splice connector on each wire. Refer to Figure 2 and TSB 86-3-11 for installation details.
