Attachment I - Technical and Administrative Instructions

OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM M65 TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE INSTRUCTIONS


PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS. CIRCULATE THEM TO YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE PERSONNEL. QUESTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO YOUR FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER OR SUPERVISING FORD LOCATION.



TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Inspection

Refer to Exhibit I. Inspect the front and rear bumper covers for the presence of the M in the indicated locations on the cover.

^ If the M is on the cover, the vehicle is OK and it may be released to the owner.

^ If there is no M on the cover proceed with the following instructions.

Replace the Bumper Covers

FRONT BUMPER COVER ALL VEHICLES:

1. Refer to Exhibit II, Figure 1. Remove turn signal assemblies by removing the two lens cover screws and then the three interior retaining screws. Move assemblies aside.

2. Remove the headlamp assemblies by removing the four mounting bracket screws. Move assemblies aside.

3. Remove the radiator grill by removing the phillips head screw and by depressing the tabs on the six quick connects.

4. Refer to Exhibit II, Figure 2. Remove the five upper quick fasteners and the four T-bolt fasteners from the bumper cover.

5. With vehicle on hoist, remove the three fasteners holding each side of the cover.

6. Remove five lower quick fasteners from the cover.

7. Slide the bumper cover forward and off the vehicle.

8. Remove the chrome trim strip from the old bumper cover and install on the new bumper cover. Be sure to begin the installation in the center of the cover and work out to the sides.

9. Remove the styrofoam insert from the old bumper cover and install in the new cover.
10. Remove six screws holding the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper cover and install on new bumper cover.

11. Install the new cover on the vehicle by reversing the above procedure. NOTE: The long quick fasteners are for the top surface openings and the short quick fasteners are for the bottom surface openings.
REAR BUMPER COVER 3 AND 5 DOOR VEHICLES:

1. Remove luggage compartment rear trim panel.

2. Remove the two side screws from each side of the bumper cover.

3. Remove rear bumper bracket screws from inside luggage compartment and remove bumper.

4. Remove all quick fasteners holding the bumper cover to the bumper. Remove bumper cover.

5. Remove chrome trim strip from the old bumper cover and install on the new bumper cover. Be sure to start at the center of the cover and work out to the sides.

6. Remove the styrofoam insert from the old bumper cover and install in the new cover.

7. Remove six screws holding the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper cover and install on new bumper cover.

8. Install the new cover on the bumper.

9. Install the bumper by reversing the above procedure.

REAR BUMPER COVER STATION WAGON:

1. Remove the three side screws from each side of the bumper cover.

2. Remove the four bolts that hold the bumper brackets to the frame and remove the bumper.

3. Remove all quick fasteners holding the bumper cover to the bumper and remove the cover.

4. Remove the chrome trim strips from the old bumper cover and install on the new bumper cover.

5. Remove the styrofoam insert from the old bumper cover and install in the new cover.

6. Remove the six screws holding the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper cover and install on the new cover.

7. Install the new bumper cover on the bumper.

8. Install the bumper on the vehicle by reversing the above procedure.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TRACERS INVOLVED IN ANOTHER PROGRAM

All of the Tracers involved in this program are also involved in Owner Notification Program 88E75 - Spark Plug Wires. Refer to that program (88E75) Dealer Letter for technical instructions.

CLAIMS PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS (A copy of these instructions should be placed in Subject 5.5 of your Warranty and Policy Manual).

^ Repairs provided under this program will be performed at no charge to owners through September, 1989. Repairs required after that date will not be covered under this program, but will be the owners' responsibility.

^ Warranty claim forms 1863 for this program must include standard claim preparation procedures and the information shown below. Program number M65 must be entered in the Program Code box in the upper left of the forms.
