LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 TRACER


ISSUE: A booming noise occurring at 3800- 4200 RPM may be caused by the No. 3 engine mount being too stiff and/or the exhaust tailpipe hanger assembly not being stiff enough.

ACTION: To correct this, install a new, softer No. 3 engine mount and reinforce the production tailpipe hanger with a new tailpipe hanger reinforcement kit. Refer to the following service procedure for step-by-step installation information.

1. Support engine with engine support, Rotunda tool number D87L-6000-A.

2. Remove the No. 3 engine mount as follows:

ATX Vehicles

a. Remove engine mount bracket by removing five (5) nuts and two (2) bolts, Figure 8.

b. Remove engine mount bolt and then remove the No. 3 mount, Figure 8.

a. Remove three (3) engine mount bracket nuts, Figure 9.

b. Remove engine mount bolt and then remove No. 3 mount, Figure 9.

NOTE: For vehicles equipped with air conditioning:

After installing the No. 3 engine mount temporarily, insert a bar between the protector of the mount bracket and the engine bracket, and move the engine to the left side so that there may be a clearance (more than 10 mm) left between the A/C clutch of the A/C compressor and the right side frame.

If the clearance is less than 10 mm, the A/C clutch may touch the frame when driving on rough roads.


3. Install the new design No. 3 engine mount (ATX vehicles E6GZ-6038-A or MTX vehicles E8GZ- 6038-B) by reversing Step 2. Torque the fasteners as follows:

5 nuts 44-63 ft.lbs. (60-85 N-m) 2 bolts 36-45 ft.lbs. (50-61 N-m) Mount bolt 36-45 ft.lbs. (50-61 N-m)

3 nuts 44-63 ft.lbs. (60-85 N-m) Mount bolt 36-45 ft.lbs. (50-61 N-m)

4. Install tailpipe hanger reinforcement kit, E7GY- 5277-B, by attaching the rear left side hanger of muffler to tailpipe as shown in Figure 11.
