Engine Sludge Deposit Inspection Procedure

ENGINE SLUDGE DEPOSIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE



Inspection 1

1. Remove the oil filter cap and check the oil sludge thickness at the following two (2) positions with the scale (Figure A).

a. Inside the oil filler cap (Figure B).

b. In the rocker cover oil separator plate surface (Figure C).

2. Put the scale upright at the thickest part of the sludge as illustrated (Figures B and C). Check the level of the sludge on the scale.

a. If the sludge at both positions is below the red zone (8 mm), install Repair Code "A" parts.

b. If the sludge level at one or both positions is at or above the red zone (8 mm), install Repair Code "A" parts and proceed to Inspection 2.
Inspection 2

1. Lift the vehicle on a hoist, drain engine oil, remove oil filter and remove oil pan following shop manual procedures. (Shop manual page 21-05-18.)

2. Visually inspect the oil pick-up screen for any sludge deposits.

a. If there are oil sludge deposits on screen, install Repair Code "B" and "C" parts.

b. If there are no oil sludge deposits on screen, install Repair Code "B" parts.
