Bumper Cover - Fades to Whitish Color

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TRACER
ISSUE: Front and rear bumper covers that fade to a "whitish" color after prolonged exposure to the sun may be caused by the type of material used to make the bumper covers. The additive used to stabilize the sun's ultra violet rays may have been omitted from the material.
ACTION: Install new bumper covers on both the front and rear of the vehicle even if only one bumper cover is faded. The new bumper covers have the necessary additive to protect them from fading. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

FRONT BUMPER COVER
1. Remove the turn signal lamp assemblies by removing the two (2) lens cover screws and three housing retaining screws, Figure 1. Position the turn signal lamp assemblies aside.
2. Remove the head lamp assemblies by removing the four (4) mounting bracket screws, Figure 1. Position the headlamp assemblies aside.
3. Remove the radiator grille by removing the "phillips" head screw and depressing the six (6) quick connect tabs, Figure 1.

4. Remove the five (5) upper quick connect fasteners and four (4) "T-bolt" fasteners from the bumper cover, Figure 2.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the three (3) fasteners holding each side of the bumper cover, Figure 2.
6. Remove the five (5) lower quick connect fasteners from the bumper cover.
7. Pull the bumper cover forward and remove it from the vehicle.
8. Remove the chrome trim strip from the old bumper cover.
9. Install the chrome strip removed in Step 8 on the new bumper cover. Make sure to begin installing the chrome strip in the center of the cover and work toward one side at a time.
10. Transfer the styrofoam insert from the old bumper to the new bumper.
11. Transfer the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper to the new bumper.
12. Install the new bumper cover by reversing Steps 1 through 7.
NOTE: THE LONG QUICK CONNECT FASTENERS ARE FOR THE TOP SURFACE OPENINGS AND THE SHORT QUICK CONNECT FASTENERS ARE FOR THE BOTTOM SURFACE OPENINGS.
REAR BUMPER COVER (3 AND 5 DOOR MODELS)
1. Remove the luggage compartment rear trim panel.
2. Remove two (2) side screws from each side of the bumper cover.
3. Remove the bumper bracket screws from inside the luggage compartment.
4. Remove the bumper.
5. Remove all the quick connect fasteners holding the bumper cover to the bumper.
6. Remove the bumper cover.
7. Remove the chrome trim strip from the old bumper cover.
8. Install the chrome strip removed in Step 7 on the new bumper cover. Make sure to begin installing the chrome strip in the center of the cover and work toward one side at a time.
9. Transfer the styrofoam insert from the old bumper to the new bumper.
10. Transfer the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper to the new bumper.
11. Install the new bumper cover by reversing Steps 1 through 6.

REAR BUMPER (STATION WAGON)
1. Remove the three (3) side screws from each side of the bumper cover.
2. Remove the four (4) bolts that hold the bumper brackets to the frame.
3. Remove the bumper.
4. Remove all the quick connect fasteners holding the bumper cover to the bumper.
5. Remove the bumper cover.
6. Remove the chrome trim strip from the old bumper cover.
7. Install the chrome strip removed in Step 7 on the new bumper cover. Make sure to begin installing the chrome strip in the center of the cover and work toward one side at a time.
8. Transfer the styrofoam insert from the old bumper to the new bumper.
9. Transfer the plastic side support assemblies from the old bumper to the new bumper.
10. Install the new bumper cover on the bumper.
11. Install the bumper on the vehicle by reversing Steps 1 through 5.
