LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 TRACER
ISSUE: A torn rear door weatherstrip in the upper "B" pillar facing area or a broken rear door weatherstrip in the latch area may be caused by backward movement of the weatherstrip when the door is opened. The affected vehicles are sedans built before 03/02/87, or station wagons built before 06/15/87.
ACTION: To correct this, install a new shorter weatherstrip using the following service procedure.
Figure 6:
NOTE: Install the weatherstrip to the door frame by using adhesive agent and self-adhesive tape, Figure 6.
1. Remove the damaged rear door weatherstrip.
2. Clean the surface area of the rear door where the new weatherstrip will make contact.
Figure 7:
3. Apply a two (2) inch bead of silicone adhesive agent on the rear-upper portion of the door frame, Figure 7.
Figure 8:
4. Install the weatherstrip tightly only on the front and rear sides of the door frame, Figure 8.
Figure 9:
5. Remove the protective paper from the adhesive tape installed on the weatherstrip and then place the weatherstrip on the corner of the frame, Figure 9.
Figure 10:
6. Install the weatherstrip on the frame. Be careful that the weatherstrip does not slip off of the corner. Press the weatherstrip where the adhesive tape is applied after installation, Figure 10.
NOTE: Application of the self-adhesive tape prevents the weatherstrip from slipping off of the door frame. The door should not be closed for 24 hours after installation of the weatherstrip.
