LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TRACER

ISSUE: Windnoise from rear of vehicle, liftgate area, may be caused by holes in the header panel sheet metal. The holes in the header panel can transmit windnoise from the air extraction vents in the "C" pillar.

ACTION: To correct this, apply tape insulators over the sheet metal holes to stop the windnoise. Refer to the following service procedure for detailed service information.

1. Remove package tray shelf.

2. Remove "C" pillar plastic rivets and phillips head screw, Figure 2.

3. Remove two (2) screws holding quarter window glass latch, (3-door model only).

4. Remove the head liner rear end plate by pulling it out of the groove at the top of the liftgate opening, Figure 3.

5. Remove plastic fasteners securing headliner corner to the "C" pillar, Figure 4.

6. Install the inner header panel rear window insulator on the inside roof area. Peel off the paper backing in the center of the insulator and align the notch of the insulator with the notch located in the center of the liftgate header panel. Peel off remaining paper backing and smooth insulator into place, Figure 5.

7. Install the right hand and left hand rear window insulators. Remove the paper backing and align the holes in the insulators with the holes on the liftgate header panel, Figure 5.

8. Install headliner corner fasteners to "C" pillar.

9. Insert headliner rear end plate into groove on liftgate header panel.

10. Install "C" pillar trim panel by installing three (3) plastic rivets and one (1) phillips head screw.

11. Install glass latch, (3-door model only).

12. Install package tray shelf.
