IDLE - ENGINE MISFIRES OR STALLS - 2.3L HSC - REVISED SPARK PLUG GAP

Article No. 88-4-13

FORD: 1988 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TOPAZ

ISSUE: A steady engine misfire and occasional stalling at idle with the engine at normal operating temperature may be caused by the original spark plug gap.

ACTION: To correct this, re-gap the spark plugs using the following service procedure.

1. Perform EEC IV self-test and service as required.

NOTE: Check to make sure the spark plug gap and ignition timing is set to specification. Make sure the spark plug wires are seated correctly on the spark plugs.

2. If misfire and stalling are still present, proceed to Step 3.

3. Re-gap spark plugs to 0.052-0.056 inch.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
