ISSUE: A "whining" noise between 1250 and 2500 engine RPM may be caused by the timing chain contacting the timing chain damper.
ACTION: To correct this, remove and throw away the timing chain damper. Refer to the following procedure for detailed service information.
FIGURE 5:

1. Remove the 6-Rib Poly "V" belt from the engine crank pulley as follows:
a. Remove the tension from the automatic belt tensioner by inserting a 12" - 18" long 3/8" drive extension bar into the lift-lug, Figure 5. The lift-lug is designed to accept only a 3/8" drive extension bar.
FIGURE 6:
CAUTION: NEVER USE A SCREWDRIVER, PRY BAR OR SIMILAR TOOL TO PRY ON THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER LIFT-LUG OR PULLEY OR DAMAGE CAN OCCUR, FIGURE 6.
b. Make sure the extension bar is fully seated into the lift-lug.
c. Using the extension bar, rotate the automatic belt tensioner counter clockwise until there is enough clearance to remove the belt from the automatic tensioner pulley.
In some instances the use of a 3" long 3/8" drive extension bar placed in the lift-lug, used with the 12" - 18" long drive extension bar, can make it easier to rotate the extension bar past the motor mount. When service requires that the alternator/power steering belt also be removed, the alternator can be moved out of the way to make it easier to rotate the extension bar.
NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE OR UN-TENSION THE WATER PUMP OR ALTERNATOR "V" BELT. ALLOW THE 6-RIB POLY "V" BELT TO HANG FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP. IF THE "V" BELTS ARE REMOVED, REINSTALL THEM USING THE GUIDELINES.
CAUTION: TENSION ON THE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT IS MAINTAINED BY THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER AND CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED. MOVEMENT OF THE AUTOMATIC BELT TENSIONER PULLEY WHILE IN OPERATION IS NORMAL.
2. Place the transmission in Neutral.
3. Start the engine and let it idle. Slowly increase the engine speed to 2500 RPM and then allow the engine to return to idle.
CAUTION: RUN ENGINE ONLY LONG ENOUGH TO PERFORM STEP 3.
4. If the "whining" noise is present, proceed to the "CHECK FOR TIMING CHAIN DAMPER" procedure below. If the "whining" is not present, the noise is coming from another source.
1988 2.5L HSC Taurus
1. Do not remove the front end accessory belts because this will disable the water pump. If the whining" noise is present, proceed to the "CHECK FOR TIMING CHAIN DAMPER" procedure below.
2. If the "whining" is not present, the noise is coming from another source.
Check For Timing Chain Damper
1. Look for a blue dot on the rocker arm cover just below the engine code tag at the front of the engine. If a blue dot is present, correction is not needed because the engine was built without the timing chain damper.
2. If a blue dot is not found, perform Steps 3 through 9 to remove the timing chain damper.
3. Remove the engine oil pan.
4. Remove the #1 main bearing cap to allow for clearance to access the front cover timing chain damper.
FIGURE 7:
5. Using needle nose pliers, remove the timing chain damper from the engine front cover and throw it away, Figure 7.
6. Wipe the crank bearing surface, bearing cap and bearing cap mounting surfaces clean. Apply engine oil to all bearing surfaces and bearing cap bolts.
7. Install the bearing cap to the block and torque bolts to 58-66 lbs.ft. (70-90 N-m).
8. Install the oil pan. Refer to the appropriate 1988 Car Shop Manual, Section 21 for service installation details.

NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL A NEW MOLDED RUBBER OIL PAN GASKET. USE RTV SEALANT E3AZ-19562-A (10 FL. OZ.) OR D6AZ-19562-BA (3 FL. OZ.), FIGURE 8. ALWAYS USE RTV ANY TIME SERVICE TO THE OIL PAN IS REQUIRED.
9. Install the 6-Rib Poly "V" accessory drive belts.
