Driveline "Roughness" and "Boom"
Vibration "dull drumming" noise at speeds above 40 MPH (64 km/H) that is usually felt in the floor pan and seats may be caused by a driveshaft that is out of balance. This condition is more noticeable with the AWD feature engaged.1. Check the driveshaft indexing for proper alignment of the paint marks. If indexed properly go to Step 3.
2. If the paint marks are greater than 90 degrees off, reindex the driveshaft to axle flange to get the closest possible alignment of paint marks. If the concern still exists go to Step 3.
3. Remove the rear halfshaft assemblies from the vehicle.
WARNING: DO NOT ENGAGE THE "AWD" FEATURE WHILE THE REAR HALFSHAFT ASSEMBLIES ARE REMOVED WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING. THE VEHICLE MUST BE AT A COMPLETE STOP TO ENGAGE THE "AWD" FEATURE.
4. Road test vehicle in front wheel drive with "AWD" switch in the "OFF" position. If the concern is still present, balance the wheel and tire assemblies.
5. With the vehicle at a complete stop, engage the "AWD" feature by depressing the "AWD" switch to the "ON" position. Allow the vehicle to slowly roll forward for about 10 yards to make sure the "AWD" system is engaged.
6. Proceed to road test the vehicle at the normal posted speed. If the concern is still present, balance the driveshaft using the procedure on pages 19 and 20.
