FORD: 1988 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TOPAZ

ISSUE: Loose or unattached outboard ends of front or rear bumpers may be caused by the bumper end inside mounting bracket coming loose, or missing from the bumper.

ACTION: If service is required for loose or missing bumper inside mounting brackets, use the following procedure. A two-part adhesive, "A-1 Structural Adhesive", should be used to perform this procedure. Refer to the bumper inside mounting bracket service application chart on this page for the correct service parts.

1. Remove bumper from vehicle.

2. Remove loose mounting bracket from bumper or vehicle.

NOTE: If bracket is missing, order a new service part.

3. Clean mounting bracket and bumper to remove dirt and paint from mating surfaces.

4. File or sand bracket and bumper mating surfaces to remove weld flash so bracket fits flush to bumper, Figure 1.

5. Wipe bumper and mounting bracket mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.

6. Make sure bracket and bumper line up properly using locating nibs on bumper, Figure 1.

7. Mix equal amounts of the two-part adhesive. The mixed adhesive must be used within five
(5) minutes.

8. Apply mixed adhesive to mounting bracket flange and install on bumper, Figure 2.

9. Lightly clamp bracket to bumper to keep bracket in place. Use cardboard or piece of wood or similar material to protect bumper outside surface.

10. Allow adhesive to set-up for one (1) hour before removing clamp. Do not reposition during setup time.

11. Install bumper on vehicle.
