FORD: 1988 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 SABLE, CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: The service procedure for adjusting the throttle valve (TV) as outlined in the 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 17-15 is incorrect. This same information was also omitted from the 1988 Taurus /Sable Shop Manual, Section 17-15 for the 3.8L engine with an AXOD transaxle.

ACTION: If service is required, use the following service procedure. This information should be inserted in your 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 17-15 and your 1988 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 17-15.

NOTE: THE THROTTLE VALVE (TV) CABLE MUST ALWAYS BE ADJUSTED WHENEVER A TV SYSTEM COMPONENT IS SERVICED.

TV Cable Adjuster Retraction

1. Note that the adjuster spring rest consists of two (2) pieces (180 degree segments).

2. Span the crack between these two (2) segments with a large screwdriver or socket extension rod.

3. Compress the spring by pushing the rod with your hand, bearing on both segments of the spring rest.

4. While spring is compressed, push the white shank toward the spring with your index and middle fingers.

CAUTION: DO NOT PULL ON CABLE SHEATH!

TV Cable Adjust

1. Unclip the TV cable from the right hand intake manifold clip.

2. Rotate the throttle body primary lever by hand (lever where TV-driving nailhead is attached) to wide open throttle (WOT).

NOTE: THE WHITE ADJUSTER SHANK MUST BEEN SEEN TO ALLOW ADJUSTMENT. IF THE WHITE SHANK CANNOT BE SEEN, CHECK FOR THE CABLE SHEATH OR FOAM HANGING-UP ON THE ENGINE OR BODY COMPONENTS.

3. Clip the TV cable into the top position of the right hand intake manifold clip.
