Balance Shaft: Description and Operation

The cylinder block incorporates a specially designed, cast iron balance shaft.. In addition, this counter-rotating shaft offsets noise, vibration and harshness qualities for improved driving and vehicle operation. Geared to the engine's camshaft, the balance shaft operates in the cylinder block at engine speed and uses special bearings with an added lubrication notch.
