5.0L/5.8L Alternator Belt

FIGURE 11:

1. Install V-ribbed alternator belt on pulleys.

2. Install an open-end wrench over the alternator adjustment boss and apply tension, Figure 11.

3. Using a belt tension gauge, set belt to correct tension: new belt 150-190 lbs. (667-845 N), used alternator belt 120-160-lbs. (532-712 N).

4. Secure alternator pivot, leaving it loose enough to allow alternator to move. While maintaining proper belt tension, torque alternator adjustment bolt to 24-34 ft.lbs. (33-46 N-m).

5. Remove belt tension gauge and idle engine for five (5) minutes.

NOTE: When retensioning a loose belt, it is important not to allow the belt to relax.

6. With engine off and tension gauge in place, apply tension to open-end wrench so that existing tension on belt is not lost. Slowly loosen alternator adjustment bolt to allow belt tension to increase to used belt specification 120-160 lbs. (532-712 N).

7. Torque alternator adjustment bolt to 24-34 ft. lbs. (33-46 N-m).

8. Torque idler bracket pivot bolt to 45-55 ft.lbs. (61-75 N-m).
