Displaying and Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide a procedure to retrieve or clear trouble codes. Code retrieval is integrated into the EATC Module Self-Test. Ford DOES NOT provide an alternate procedure for performing the Self-Test with an NGS or generic tester.

The control assembly (head) detects certain system faults during normal operation and is capable of testing for other faults during the ``self-test.'' If an actuator malfunction is detected during normal operation, the Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) or mode Light Emitting Diode (LED) will blink.
When a malfunction is detected, the error code(s) may be displayed by simultaneously depressing the Off/Auto and Defrost buttons, then the A/C button within two seconds to initiate the ``self-test.'' Error codes found during the ``self-test'' will be displayed along with any faults found during normal operation. Activation of the ``self-test'' will stop normal operation of the system. To exit the ``self-test'' and restart the system, the Cool button must be depressed.
Refer to error code key, and pinpoint tests A through G, to diagnose any displayed error codes. If a malfunction exists, but no error code is displayed, refer to pinpoint tests H through P. Displayed error codes must be considered invalid if in-vehicle temperature is 50 F or less.

1. Turn ignition off, then back on to reset the system.
2. Ensure engine coolant temperature is at least 120°F.
3. Set control head to Auto/90°F. Wait a minimum of 40 seconds, then verify the following conditions:
a. System goes to high blower and warm air is being discharged from floor.
b. Recirc door is in ``outside air'' position.
c. Warm air is bleeding out of defroster nozzle.
4. Enter ``self-test'', then record all faults and error codes displayed. Exit ``self-test'' and diagnose error code(s).
5. Set control head to Auto/60°F. Wait a minimum of 40 seconds, then verify the following conditions:
a. Cool air is being discharged from panel.
b. Recirc door is in ``recirc'' position.
6. Enter ``self-test'', then record all faults and error codes displayed. Exit ``self- test'' and diagnose error code(s).
7. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
8. Perform pinpoint tests H through P, if any other faults still exist. When diagnosing a vehicle at idle, the system will likely discharge cool air from the panel up to an ``85°'' set point due to engine heat acting on the ambient sensor. Because of this, the vehicle should be road tested as a final checkout.
