EGR Backpressure Transducer - Damage During Service

EGR BACKPRESSURE TRANSDUCER - 3.8L - POSSIBLE DAMAGE DURING ENGINE SERVICE
FORD: 1988 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR
ISSUE: The EGR backpressure transducer may be damaged when the engine is raised from the engine mounts to service the oil pan, oil pump, etc. When the engine is raised the EGR backpressure transducer may contact the dash panel.
ACTION: If service is required, remove the EGR backpressure transducer before the engine is raised. Refer to the following removal and installation procedure.
1. Remove the nut holding the EGR backpressure transducer bracket to the top rear of the upper intake manifold.
2. Remove the EGR backpressure transducer hose from the EGR valve.
CAUTION: Care MUST be taken so the hose is not torn during removal.
3. Position the EGR backpressure transducer, bracket and hose assembly aside.
NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the assembly from the electrical wire harness.
4. Reposition the EGR backpressure transducer assembly.
5. Reconnect the EGR backpressure transducer hose to the EGR valve.
6. Reposition the EGR backpressure transducer bracket to the top rear of the upper intake manifold and reinstall the retaining nut. Torque to 14-22 ft.lbs. (20-30 N-m).
