Camshaft: Service and Repair

1. Remove engine from vehicle and mount in suitable work stand.
2. Remove front cover and timing chain as outlined under Front Cover, Timing Chain & Sprockets, Replace.
3. Remove intake manifold and hydraulic valve lifters as outlined under Hydraulic Valve Lifters, Replace.
4. Remove camshaft thrust plate, then carefully pull camshaft from cylinder block. Use caution to avoid damaging bearings, journals and lobes.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installation, lubricate camshaft lobes and journals with SAE 50 weight oil.
b. Torque camshaft thrust plate attaching screws to 6---8 ft. lbs.
c. Lubricate lifters, lifter bores, rocker arms and pushrods with oil conditioner D9AZ-19579-A or suitable heavy engine oil.
