2. Remove retaining clip, then disconnect shift rod from selector lever, Fig. 1.
3. Rotate transmission shift lever as far as possible toward front of vehicle.
4. Rotate transmission shift lever three detent position toward rear of vehicle on Scorpio models, or two detent positions toward the rear of the vehicle on XR4Ti models.

Fig. 2 Sliding shift rod clevis over selector lever pin:

6. On all models, without moving the selector or transmission levers, attempt to slide the shift rod clevis in or out to obtain the proper fit, Fig. 2.
7. If the clevis slides into the pin, the linkage is properly adjusted.
8. If the clevis does not slide into the pin, loosen locknut and thread the clevis in or out to obtain the proper fit.
9. After adjustment, tighten clevis locknut. Ensure the linkage adjustment has not affected proper operation of the neutral safety switch. With the brake applied and service brakes applied, try to start the engine in each gear shift lever position. The engine must crank only in the Neutral or Park positions. If the engine cranks in any of the other shift positions, check linkage adjustment and neutral safety switch operation.
