Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation
The vane air meter assembly is mounted on a bracket directly below the air cleaner in the lower right hand corner of the engine compartment. The vane air meter assembly consists of an air flow sensor and a vane air temperature sensor. These two sensors supply input signals to the EEC computer. The vane air meter measures the volume of air flow to the engine. Air flow through the body moves a vane mounted on a pivot pin. The vane is connected to a potentiometer (variable resistor) that is connected to a 5 volt reference voltage. Potentiometer output varies according to volume of air flowing through the sensor. The temperature sensor in the air vane meter measures incoming air temperature. The EEC uses the air volume and temperature inputs to compute the injector pulse duration necessary for an ideal air/fuel ratio.
