Boost Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Fig. 2 Checking boost control solenoid wiring & hoses:
TEST 1, INSPECTION
1. Inspect wiring and hoses for proper connection and check hoses for leaks or deterioration, Fig. 2.
2. If no repairs are required, proceed to TEST 2.
3. If repairs are required, make necessary repairs, then verify solenoid operation.
TEST 2, POWER FEED TO SOLENOID CHECK
1. Connect test light between red wire and clean underbody ground, then turn ignition switch to RUN position, and observe test light.
2. If test light illuminates, proceed to TEST 3.
3. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in power feed circuit, then verify solenoid operation.
Fig. 3 Checking operation of boost control solenoid:
TEST 3, SOLENOID OPERATIONAL CHECK
1. Connect jumper wire from solenoid purple wire to clean underbody ground, Fig. 3, and listen for solenoid click, then turn ignition switch to RUN position.
2. If solenoid clicks, proceed to TEST 4.
3. If solenoid does not click, replace boost control solenoid, then verify operation of new solenoid.
TEST 4, CONTROL CIRCUIT CHECK
1. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between wire at ECA pin 32 and purple wire at solenoid.
2. If there is continuity, proceed to TEST 5.
3. If there is no continuity, repair open in ECA control circuit, then verify solenoid operation.
TEST 5, SOLENOID FUNCTIONAL CHECK
1. Disconnect solenoid hose at turbocharger and PCV fittings and plug PCV hose.
2. Using suitable vacuum pump, apply vacuum through turbocharger hose.
3. If vacuum holds, problem is not in solenoid.
