Ignition Rotor: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect coil wire at distributor cap.
2. Loosen distributor cap hold down screws, then pull cap straight off distributor.
3. Tag spark plug wires for proper assembly, then disconnect wires from cap.
4. On XR4Ti, loosen rotor attaching screws.
5. On all models, remove rotor.
6. Wipe distributor cap with clean damp cloth and dry with compressed air.
7. Inspect cap for cracks, broken carbon button, carbon tracks or dirt or corrosion on terminals, replacing as necessary.
8. Wipe rotor with clean damp cloth and dry with compressed air.
9. Inspect rotor for cracks, carbon tracks, burns, damaged points or damaged spring, replacing as necessary. When installing new multipoint distributor rotor, do not apply silicone compound to rotor points.
10. Install rotor on shaft. On XR4Ti, ensure that square and round locator pins are aligned with hole in shaft plate, and install attaching screws.
11. On all models, position distributor cap on base, noting square alignment indicator and being careful not to damage rotor blade or spring, and tighten hold down screws.
12. Install spark plug wires in proper firing order, then connect coil wire.
