Intake Manifold - Installation Damage Prevention

Article No. 86-24-14

INTAKE MANIFOLD - 1.9L - CRACKS AT MOUNTING FLANGE - REVISED INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR FUEL CHARGING ASSEMBLY

FORD 1987 ESCORT, EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1987 LYNX

CALIBRATION: 1.9L CFI

Intake manifold cracks at the fuel charging assembly mounting flange may be caused by overtightening of the retaining bolts at the time of installation. To prevent cracking of the mounting flange, use the following revised service procedure:

1. Clean the mounting surface and position a new gasket on the intake manifold.

2. Apply two drops of Loctite Threadlocker 242 Liquid on the long threaded end of bolts; approximately the last 6 to 8 threads.

Figure 11:

3. Snug bolts #1, #2, and #3 by hand while centering the CFI throttle body on the spacer, Figure 11.
4. First, tighten bolt #1, then #2, then #3 to 8 +/- 2 ft.lbs. (11 +/- 4 N-m).

5. Then tighten bolt #1, then #2, then #3 to 16 +/- 2 ft.lbs. (22 +/- 4 N-m).

6. Reconnect the electrical connectors to ISC, throttle position sensor, and fuel injector.

7. Reconnect the fuel inlet and outlet connections, and connect the PCV vacuum line at fuel charging assembly.

8. Reconnect throttle cable and transmission throttle valve lever.

9. Reconnect electrical connector at inertia switch.

10. Install air tube and clamp at fuel charging assembly.

11. Start engine and check for leaks. Check idle speed and reset to specification if necessary. (Refer to engine decal and Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.)
