FORD: 1987 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987 COUGAR

ISSUE: Transmissions that lock-up in the Park mode on 1987 Thunderbird/Cougar vehicles with floor gear selectors may be caused by a shift cable bracket that is not positioned correctly on the gear selector. This allows the shift cable to catch on the plastic cable housing when the gear selector is positioned in Park ("P").

ACTION: To correct this, install a new design gear selector and shift cable bracket using the following service procedure. Refer to the application chart on this page for the correct service parts.

1. Remove boot that seals end of shift cable on the transmission.

2. Check if shift cable core rod extends past the plastic cable housing when gear selector is positioned in Park ("P"), Figure 10. If yes, continue to Step 3.

3. Replace gear selector and shift cable bracket. Refer to the 1987 Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 17-02.
