Refer to Diesel Engine Performance Specifications chart for specified injection pump timing.
1. Ensure engine coolant temperature is approximately 176° F.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, located in luggage compartment.
3. Remove injection pump distributor head bolt and sealing washer.
4. Install static timing gauge adapter, Rotunda model 14-0303 and metric dial indicator D82L4-201-A or equivalent, so dial indicator pointer contacts injection pump plunger, Fig. 1.
5. Remove timing mark cover from transmission housing and align timing mark (TDC) with pointer on rear engine cover plate, Fig. 2.
6. Rotate crankshaft pulley slowly, counterclockwise until dial indicator pointer stops moving (approximately 30---50° BTDC).
7. Set dial indicator to zero. Ensure dial indicator pointer does not move from zero by slightly rotating crankshaft left and right.
8. Turn crankshaft clockwise until crankshaft timing mark aligns with indicator pin. Dial indicator should read .04 inch (1 +/- .02 mm). If reading obtained is not as specified, adjust injection timing as follows:
a. Loosen injection pump attaching bolts and nuts.
b. Rotate injection pump toward engine to advance timing or away from engine to retard timing. Rotate injection pump until dial indicator reads .04inch (1 +/- .02 mm).
9. Torque injection pump mounting nuts and bolts to 13---20 ft. lbs., then injection pump distributor head bolt to 10---14.5 ft. lbs.
