A/T - AXOD Support Locations When Servicing

Article No. 86-7-8

ENGINE (3.0L) - SUPPORT LOCATIONS WHEN SERVICING THE ENGINE - SHOP MANUAL REVISION

TRANSMISSION (AXOD) - SUPPORT LOCATIONS WHEN SERVICING THE TRANSMISSION - SHOP MANUAL REVISION

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

This article is published to clarify the proper lifting and support locations to be used with engine and transmission removal procedures outlined in the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Sections 17-15-48 and 21-12-4. There has been some confusion reported where engines lifting brackets and supports should be attached when removing either the engine assembly or the AXOD transmission.

NOTE: The engine assembly is to be separated from the transmission and removed from the top side of the engine compartment. If the transmission is to be removed, the engine must be properly supported and transmission is removed from the bottom side of the vehicle after the subframe is removed.

Equipment Required:

^ Two engine lifting brackets (D81L-6001-D or equivalent)

These brackets are to be attached to a lifting chain or equivalent for engine removal or attached to the engine support bars to retain the engine during transmission removal.

^ Engine support bars (D79P-6000-B or equivalent)

An engine support bar may be fabricated from a length of 4" x 4" wood cut to 57" in length.

Procedure:

Attach the engine support bars as follows:

Figure 8:

1. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly and attach an engine lifting bracket to the rear of the left cylinder head (radiator side) using a M10x1.5x 20 bolt. (See Figure 8)

2. The engine plant lifting eye should still be on the right front cylinder head (cowl side).

If not, install a second lifting bracket as in Step 1.

3. Place the engine support bars across the engine over each rocker arm cover and attach chains to the bars and lifting brackets.

4. For AXOD transmission removal, follow the procedures outlined in the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 17-15-48. For engine removal, follow the procedures outlined in Section 21-12-4.

When the two support locations outlined above are used, the engine assembly will hang down at a 5~ angle to the rear with the AXOD attached. With the AXOD transmission removed, the engine assembly will hang down at a 15~ angle to the front.

If necessary to eliminate either or both of these tilts, attach supports as follows:

^ For the forward tilt, attach a chain from the left front support bar to the stud on the No. 4 exhaust runner.

^ For the rearward tilt, attach a chain from the right rear support bar to the exhaust manifold between the No. 2 and No. 3 exhaust runner.

CAUTION: The support hook or chain must angle forward to the front attaching point. Subsequent damage may result to engine components if chain is positioned across the throttle cable or the throttle valve mechanism.

The above information should be retained in your 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual for future reference.
