LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-87 SABLE


ISSUE: The steering column shift lever opening seal is now serviced in color to match the steering column. This will eliminate the need to paint the shift lever opening seal if it is replaced.

ACTION: If replacement of the steering column shift lever opening seal is required, use the following service procedure.

1. Remove upper shroud from steering column.

2. Carefully grip edge of retainer with long nose pliers until retainer is bent or cracks in half. Remove retainers and seal, see Figure 6.

NOTE: Both posts on the steering column upper shroud must be intact, Figure 7. If one or both posts are broken off, the upper shroud must be replaced. The new shroud will be in prime, and must be painted to match.

3. Place the new seal over the posts on the upper shroud and install new retainers supplied with the new color-keyed seal, Figures 8 and 9.
