Engine Cooling Fan - Causes Excessive A/C Pressure

Article No. 86-13-8

AIR CONDITIONING - LOSS OF REFRIGERANT-INOPERATIVE ENGINE COOLING FAN

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

A strange noise may be heard during A/C operation. This may also be followed by what appears to be smoke. This may be caused by high A/C discharge pressure being vented out the pressure relief valve because of an inoperative engine cooling fan. Prior to recharging the refrigerant system, the engine cooling fan circuit and cooling fan motor resistor must be checked and repaired as necessary. A diagnostic procedure to detect a dropping/failing resistor is being developed and will be forthcoming in a future TSB.

NOTE: The engine cooling fan must operate at low speed during A/C operation. A crack in the resistor body does not always indicate a failed part.
