Removal and Installation


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Wedge a wood bloc approximately 7 inches long under clutch pedal.
3. Grasp clutch cable and pull forward, disconnecting it from clutch release shaft assembly, then remove clutch cable casing from rib on top surface of transaxle case.
4. Remove upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts, then raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove lower control arm ball joint to steering knuckle assembly attaching bolts and nuts on both sides, discarding nuts and bolts.
6. Using tool D83P-4026-A or equivalent, pry lower control arms away from knuckle, being careful not to cut or damage ball joint boot and ensuring pry bar does not contact lower arm.
7. Using suitable pry bar, pry left inboard CV joint assembly from transaxle and install two plugs.
8. Remove inboard CV joint from transaxle by grasping left hand steering knuckle and swinging knuckle and half shaft outward from transaxle, being careful not to damage differential oil seal, then repeat procedure on opposite side.
9. If CV joint assembly cannot be pried from transaxle, insert tool T81P-4026-A or equivalent through left side and top joint out Tool can be used from either side of transaxle.
10. Wire half shaft assemblies in a near level position to prevent damage to assemblies.
11. Using small screwdriver, remove backup lamp switch connector from transaxle backup lamp switch at top of transaxle.
12. Remove three starter mounting bolts.
13. Remove shift mechanism to shift shaft attaching nut and bolt and the control selector indicator switch arm, then remove arm from shift shaft
14. Remove bolts attaching shift cable and bracket assembly to transaxle.
15. Remove speedometer cable from transaxle.
16. Remove two stiffener brace attaching bolts from lower position of clutch housing.
17. Position suitable jack under transaxle, lower jack slightly and remove lower engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
18. Remove transaxle from rear face of engine and lower from vehicle.

WARNING: Transaxle case casting may have sharp edges. Wear protective gloves when handling transaxle assembly.


19. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure transaxle assembly is flush with rear face of engine before installing attaching bolts.
b. Torque lower engine to transaxle attaching bolts to 28-31 ft lbs (37-41 Nm).
c. Do not attempt to start engine before installing CV joints.
d. Be careful not to cross thread cable nut onto retainer when installing speedometer cable.
e. Torque 10M shift cable and bracket assembly attaching bolt to 16-22 ft lbs (21-29 Nm) and the 12M bolt to 22-35 ft lbs (29-47 Nm).
f. Torque shift mechanism to shift shaft attaching bolt to 7-10 ft lbs (9-13 Nm), the stiffener brace attaching bolts to 15-21 ft lbs (20-28 Nm), and the starter attaching bolts to 30-40 ft lbs (40-54 Nm).
g. Install new circlips oh both inner joints, be careful not to damage oil seals when inserting shaft into transaxle and ensure both joints are fully seated, prying lightly outward to confirm that retaining rings are seated.
h. Install new pinch bolt and nut, torquing nut to 37-44 ft lbs (50-59 Nm). Do not tighten bolt.
i. Torque upper engine to transaxle attaching bolts to 28-31 ft lbs (37-41 Nm).
