Alternator Fan Shield - Cracks At Attachment Bolts

ALTERNATOR - FAN SHIELD - CRACKS AT ATTACHMENT BOLTS


MERKUR 1985-86 XR4Ti

The alternator fan shield on some 1985-86 Merkur XR4Ti vehicles may crack at the attaching bolts. A new alternator fan shield is now available for service.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

2. Remove the alternator attaching bolts and the alternator. Discard the cracked alternator fan shield.

3. Position the alternator and new shield and loosely install the attaching bolts.

4. Position the drive belts on the pulley and using tool T63L-8620-A belt tension gauge, adjust the tension to 120-160 lbs. (new belt) or 110-130 lbs. (used belt - more than 10 minutes of run time). Tighten the adjuster pivot bolt to 44-60 ft.lbs. (60- 81 N-m) and the adjuster nut to 3O-36 ft.lbs. (40-49 N-m).

5. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
