Valve Clearance: Adjustments
Fig. 1 Adjusting Valves:
1. Remove valve cover.
2. Position camshaft so that base circle of lobe is facing cam follower of valve to be checked. To position camshaft lobes, turn crankshaft using ratchet handle and socket on crankshaft pulley attaching bolt. Always turn crankshaft clockwise. Counterclockwise rotation may cause timing belt to jump time.
3. Using valve spring compressor T74P-6565-A or equivalent, slowly apply pressure on lash adjuster side of cam follower until lash adjuster is completely collapsed. Holding follower in this position, measure clearance between base circle of cam and the follower using a feeler gauge, Fig. 1.
4. Clearance should be .0035-.0055 inch. If clearance exceeds .0055 inch, remove cam follower and inspect for damage.
5. If cam follower appears to be intact, and not excessively worn, measure valve spring assembled height.
6. If assembled height is correct, check dimensions of camshaft.
7. If camshaft dimensions are within specifications, remove, clean and test lash adjuster.
