Oil Pan: Service and Repair


REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect oil level sensor electrical connector and remove oil dipstick.
3. Install engine support tool D79P-6000-B or equivalent.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil.
5. Remove starter.
6. Remove pinch bolt at steering column to steering gear coupling.
7. Remove engine mount studs to crossmember attaching bolts.
8. Lower vehicle and, using support tool, raise engine as far as possible.
9. Raise vehicle, then remove steering gear to crossmember attaching bolts.
10. Disengage steering gear from steering column and pull forward, away from steering column, being careful not to bend or stretch power steering gear hoses and lines.
11. Position suitable jack under crossmember, then remove crossmember to side rail attaching bolts.
12. Lower transmission jack and crossmember, then remove oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean gasket surfaces on oil pan and cylinder block.
2. Apply even coat of suitable sealant to oil pan side gaskets and allow sealant to dry past wet stage, then install on oil pan.
3. Apply {1/4} inch bead of suitable sealant along seam between cylinder block and front cover, and along seam between cylinder block and rear main bearing cap.
4. Install oil pan end seals in front cover and rear main bearing cap, Fig. 12.
5. Position oil pan and install attaching bolts.
6. Torque corner attaching bolts to 106-133 inch lbs. and other bolts to 80-102 inch lbs., beginning at hole ``A,'' Fig. 12, and working clockwise around pan.
7. Raise crossmember into position and install crossmember to side member attaching bolts, torque bolts to 38-47 ft. lbs. and remove jack.
8. Position steering gear on crossmember and connect to steering column, then install attaching bolts and torque to 10 ft. lbs. plus additional {1/4} turn.
9. Torque steering column to gear pinch bolt to 16-15 ft. lbs.
10. Lower vehicle and remove engine support tool, then raise vehicle.
11. Install engine mount attaching nuts, torquing to 50-70 ft. lbs.
12. Install starter, then lower vehicle.
13. Fill crankcase and connect electrical connector at oil level sensor, if equipped.
14. Connect battery ground cable, then start engine and check for oil leaks along edge of oil pan.
