Disassembly

Fig. 4 Exploded view of Motorcraft model 5740 carburetor:





1. To avoid damaging throttle plates and to facilitate working on carburetor, install bolts approximately 21/4 inches long of correct diameter through carburetor retaining bolt holes with a nut above and below the flange.
2. Remove fuel inlet filter, Fig. 4.
3. Remove throttle plate, then remove 6 air horn attaching screws and the air horn.
4. Invert air horn assembly, then remove float hinge pin, float, inlet needle, needle seat and gasket.
5. Remove choke cap and choke housing shield. Drill rivets out with a 1/8 inch drill.
6. Remove 3 choke housing screws, then slide housing away from air horn and disengage primary choke link from choke link slot.
7. Remove choke pulldown cover attaching screws, then the cover and spring.
8. Disconnect choke assist spring from choke housing.
9. Remove choke housing shaft nut, lockwasher and dechoke lever, then slide choke housing shaft and choke thermostat actuating lever assembly outward.
10. Move choke pulldown diaphragm assembly outward until modulator collar bottoms on guide bushing, then depress clips on bushing and slide diaphragm assembly out.
11. Remove ISC assembly, then the 4 accelerator pump attaching screws, accelerator pump cover, pump diaphragm and pump return spring.
12. Remove accelerator pump nozzle using suitable pliers.
13. Remove idle fuel shutoff solenoid and gasket from main body using tool No. T81P-9510-A or equivalent.
14. Remove 3 power valve cover attaching screws, then the power valve cover, spring and diagram, if equipped.
15. Remove dashpot, then the ISC assembly.
16. Remove idle jet retainer clips, then the float bowl gasket.
17. Remove idle mixture plug as described under ``Concealment Plug Removal.''
18. Count and record number of turns needed to lightly seat idle mixture adjustment screw, then remove the screw and O-ring.
19. Remove primary and secondary fuel discharge nozzles.
20. Remove primary and secondary idle jet holders. Mark holders so they may be installed in their original positions.
21. Remove primary and secondary main jet assemblies. Mark jets so they may be installed in their original positions.
