Fig. 4 Exploded view of Motorcraft model 5740 carburetor:

1. Install primary and secondary main jets, Fig. 4, and torque to 16 inch lbs.
2. Install jet holders and torque to 9 inch lbs. on 1985 models, or 16 inch lbs. on 1986 models.
3. Install primary and secondary fuel discharge nozzles.
4. Install idle mixture adjustment screw and O-ring. Turn screw until it lightly bottoms, then back out exact number of turns recorded during disassembly.
5. Install carburetor assembly on engine and adjust idle mixture as described in the ``Inline 4 Cylinder Gasoline Engine Tune Up'' section of this chapter. Install concealment plug.
6. Install ISC assembly and torque to 9 ft. lbs.
7. Install dashpot assembly.
8. Install power valve diaphragm, spring and power valve cover. Secure cover with 3 screws and torque to 10.6 inch lbs.
9. Install idle fuel shutoff solenoid and gasket using tool No. T81P-9510-A or equivalent and torque to 40 inch lbs.
10. Install float bowl gasket, then the idle jet retainer clips.
11. Lubricate O-ring and position on accelerator pump nozzle, then install the nozzle.
12. Install accelerator pump return spring, pump diaphragm and pump cover. Secure cover with 4 screws and torque to 16 inch lbs. Install ISC assembly and torque to 106 inch lbs.
13. Install choke pulldown diaphragm assembly, then the spring and cover. Secure cover with 4 screws and torque to 10.6 inch lbs.
14. Install choke housing shaft assembly into choke housing, ensuring both shaft arms are to the left of fast idle cam.
15. Connect primary choke link to dechoke lever and dechoke lever to choke housing shaft. Install washer and nut and torque to 14.2 inch lbs.
16. Install choke housing assembly. Secure with 3 screws and torque to 50 inch lbs. Ensure proper movement of choke mechanism.
17. Install choke cap and choke housing shield. Secure choke cap with rivets.
18. Position a new air horn gasket on main body.
19. Install inlet needle seat and gasket and torque to 53 inch lbs.
20. Install inlet needle float and float hinge pin.
21. Open throttle lever to clear choke housing, then install air horn assembly to main body. Secure with 6 screws and torque to 21 inch lbs.
22. Install a new inlet fuel filter and torque to 100 inch lbs.
