STALLS - WHILE BRAKING - AFTER HOT SOAK - 1.9L 2V - VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN MARCH 1985 AND MARCH 1986
FORD 1985-86 ESCORT, EXP

Engine stalls while braking after a hot soak period may be caused by an overly rich idle air/fuel mixture due to internal fuel bowl vapors. To correct this, install a new design vacuum tree fitting and hose, using the procedure below.
1. Remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove dashpot mounting bracket from carburetor (two mounting screws on the carburetor mounting flange facing toward the instrument panel).
3. Remove the crankcase vent hose assembly from the air cleaner connector to the intake manifold vacuum tree.
4. Remove remaining vacuum hoses from the intake manifold vacuum tree.
5. Using diagonal cutters, snip off 1/4 inch diameter vacuum port from intake manifold vacuum tree to allow removal of fitting without interference with coolant bypass hose.
6. Install replacement intake manifold vacuum tree.

7. Torque intake manifold vacuum tree to 7-12 lbs.ft. (10-16 N-m). Maintain the original port alignment with the purge valve and main vacuum system ports positioned approximately 10 degrees above horizontal.
8. Install proper high idle compensator valve (refer to chart in Step 6) into threaded port of manifold vacuum tree. Remove old high idle compensator valve from system, if equipped.
Figure 18:
9. Reconnect 7/32 inch diameter vacuum hose from the evaporative purge control valve to the intake manifold fitting Port #1 per Figure 18 (same as original routing).
10. For MTX applications, connect existing large diameter anti-backfire (gulp) valve hose to vacuum Port #4 and secure with hose clamp.
11. Reconnect existing main vacuum harness hose to Port #2 (same as original routing).
12. Install 3/8 inch to 1/4 inch reducer hose, E3FZ- 9G297-A. Connect the 3/8 inch end to the PCV valve and the 1/4 inch end to vacuum Port #3. See Figure 18.
NOTE: Cut the reducer hose to fit while making sure not to kink the hose.
13. Reconnect the reworked crankcase vent hose to the air cleaner assembly. Reconnect the PCV valve vacuum line (yellow or white) to its original fitting.
14. Reinstall dashpot mounting bracket and check that dashpot clearance is to specification.
15. Reinstall air cleaner assembly.
