Ignition Lock - Binds/Does Not Return From START

Article No. 86-23-4

IGNITION LOCK - BINDS - DOES NOT RETURN FROM START POSITION

FORD 1986 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 COUGAR, LINCOLN TOWN CAP

LIGHT TRUCK 1986 AEROSTAR

The ignition lock cylinder may not return to the "Run" position after starting the vehicle. This may cause the starter motor to overrun and the instrument panel lighting not to work. The binding is caused by the lack of a pilot on the end of the lock cylinder. To correct this, a special service ignition lock cylinder with partially cut keys is available and can be installed using the following procedure.

NOTE: The head of the new keys from the Ignition Lock Set ("Service Only") will only match the non-turbo Thunderbird/Cougar keys. If the customer is concerned about the head of the keys being matched for Lincoln Town Car, Turbo Thunderbird/Cougar and Aerostar, two additional blank keys must be ordered through Rotunda. Cut the two blank keys on tumbler station numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 to match the new keys from the selected Ignition Lock Set ("Service Only") using the called out tool.

1. Remove the ignition lock cylinder, refer to the 1986 Car Shop Manual, Section 13-03 for Lincoln Town Car; Section 13-06 for Thunderbird/Cougar; and, 1986 Aerostar Shop Manual, Section 3-02 for removal and installation procedure.

2. After removing the lock cylinder, check for a pilot on the end of the cylinder, Figure 10. If the lock cylinder does not have a pilot, continue to Step 3. If a pilot is present, this procedure will not correct the concern.

3. Use the Ford Rotunda key code cutting package (Tool 127-00003) to measure the depth of cut on the number six tumbler station of the original key. Use this measurement to determine the correct service ignition lock set. Refer to the chart in Figure 11.

4. Using the old ignition key, decode tumbler cut numbers 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 using the called out tool.

5. Cut the new key position numbers 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 using the called out tool.

6. Check the new key operation in the new ignition lock cylinder and the doors (both keys).

7. Install the new ignition lock cylinder in the steering column (refer to the appropriate Shop Manual).

8. Start the vehicle to verify proper operation.

NOTE: Make sure that both new keys will return to the run position from start position without drag. For future key code identification, retain both old and new key tags.
