87-89 Mustang 2.3L Non-Turbo

1987-89 Model Mustang (Built before 4/1/89) - 49 States, 2.3L Non-Turbo engine
Inspection
1. Locate the slot in the underbody of the catalyst heat shield that shows the catalyst part number. Refer to illustration.
2. Using the following part number information, determine if the catalyst assembly should be replaced.
^ If the part number is one of the following numbers, do not replace the catalyst assembly.

^ Prepare an Authorized Modifications Decal (Form-8262-PP) as follows:
Insert your dealer P&A code, "Emissions Recall 91E13," and the date of service. Affix the decal to a clean, flat surface on the fan shroud. Install the clear overlay over the decal.
3. If the catalyst is not one ot the part numbers, proceed with the replacement of the catalyst assembly.
Catalytic Converter
Removal
1. Disconnect downstream injection air hose connect at check valve, if so equipped.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Support muffler with wire.
4. Remove nuts retaining converter inlet pipe flange to exhaust manifold.
5. Remove nuts retaining converter outlet flange to muffler.
6. Remove upper and lower heat shield retaining bolts.
7. Remove converter.
Installation
1. Clean exhaust manifold and catalytic converter flange seats.
2. Align upper and lower heat shields to converter flange. Install and tighten retaining bolts to 14-20 N-m (11-14 Lb.Ft).
3. Insert shield rods into front bracket insulators.
4. Position inlet pipe to manifold and install. Do not tighten retaining nuts.
5. Remove wire support from muffler assembly and install muffler inlet flange to converter outlet flange. Loosely install retaining nuts.
6. Align exhaust system to proper clearance specifications, as shown in View A of illustration.
7. Starting at the front of the system, tighten all nuts and bolts to the specifications shown.
8. Connect downstream air injection hose at check valve, if so equipped.
9. Check exhaust system for leaks.
AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS DECAL
The preprinted Authorized Modifications Decal shown is provided in the parts kit.
^ Insert your P&A Code and date and attach the Authorized Modifications Decal to a clean surface on the fan shroud.
^ Place the clear overlay on the decal.
