Removal

NOTE: If the front cover is being removed to check timing chain deflection.

1. Drain the cooling system.

Timing Cover R&R:




2. Disconnect the cable from the battery negative terminal.

3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and air intake duct.

4. Remove the fan shroud attaching screws. Remove the fan/clutch assembly attaching bolts.

5. Remove the fan/clutch assembly and shroud.

6. Loosen the accessory drive belt idler. Remove the drive belt and water pump pulley.

7. If equipped with power steering, remove the pump mounting brackets attaching bolts.

Leaving the hoses connected, place the pump bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent the fluid from leaking out.

8. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor front support bracket. Leave the compressor in place.

9. Disconnect the coolant by-pass hose at the water pump.

10. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.

11. Disconnect the radiator upper hose at the thermostat housing.

12. Disconnect the coil wire from the distributor cap and remove the cap with the secondary wires attached.

13. Remove the distributor hold down clamp and lift the distributor out of the front cover.

14. If equipped with tripminder, remove the fuel flow meter support bracket (the fuel lines will support the flow meter).

15. Raise the vehicle.

16. Remove the crankshaft damper using Puller Head and Damper Remover Adapter or equivalent.

17. Remove the fuel pump crash shield, if so equipped.

18. Disconnect the fuel pump to carburetor fuel line at the fuel pump.

19. Remove the fuel pump attaching bolts. Pull the pump out of the front cover and lay the pump aside with flexible line attached.

20. Remove the oil filter.

21. Disconnect the radiator lower hose at the water pump.

22. Remove the oil pan.

CAUTION: The front cover cannot be removed without lowering the oil pan.

23. Lower the vehicle.

24. Remove the front cover attaching bolts. It is not necessary to remove the water pump.

CAUTION: Do not overlook the cover attaching bolt located behind the oil filter adapter. The front cover will break If pried upon and all at taching bolts are not removed.

25. Remove the ignition timing indicator.

26. Remove the front cover and water pump as an assembly.

27. Remove the cover gasket and discard.

28. Remove the camshaft thrust button and spring from the end of the camshaft.

Timing Chain R&R:




29. Remove the camshaft sprocket attaching bolts.

Crankshaft Timing Gear Removal:




30. Remove the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and the timing chain.

If the crankshaft sprocket is difficult to remove, pry the sprocket off the shaft using a pair of large screwdrivers positioned on both sides of the sprocket.

NOTE: The front cover contains the oil pump and intermediate shaft. If a new front cover is to be installed, remove the water pump, oil pump, oil filter adapter, and intermediate shaft from the old front cover.
