Fuel Injector Inspection Instructions
Exhibit I - Emissions Recall 89E78 - Repair Code "C"
Pre-inspection Vehicle Set-Up
^ Set the parking brake
^ Wheels straight-forward
^ All accessodes turned-off
^ Block the wheels
^ Check for vacuum leaks and wiggle the electfical connectors
REPLACE THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) PROCESSOR
1. Look at the 8th digit in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Determine the injector color-code using the chart below:

S (HO) Green
X (Base) Blue
SPECIAL DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION
The existing EEC Processor will be replaced with a 1987-model Processor. Use 1987-model Shop Manual Diagnostic Information when it is necessary to service the EEC System.
2. Disconnect battery.
3. Remove existing processor and replace with appropriate part number prccessor.
4. Refer to Modification Procedure Summary (Attachment I, Page 1).
5. Locate the fuel injector in the central fuel charging assembly. Remove the electrical connector from the top of the injector.
Injector Visual Check Procedure
^ Remove the electrical wire harness connector to the fuel injector.
^ Clean the injector connector shell if necessary.
^ Use a light or flash light on the flat side of the connector shell to see the injector date code (molded into the ccnnector shell).
^ Go to the Injector Date Code Chart.

6. Refer to Figure 1, below. Look at the side of the injector electrical connector for the build date. (Three numbers followed by one letter). Using the following chart, interpret the injector build date 744D as per example.
7. Refer to the following chart to determine if the injector requires replacement.
^ Replace injectors with build dates prior to the following dates.
^ DO NOT replace injectors with build dates on or after the following dates.
