Engine - Stalls On Cold Transmission Engagement

Article No. 85-14-13

STALLS ENGAGEMENT - AFTER INITIAL COLD START - 2.3L HSC CFI WITH ATX TRANSMISSION

FORD 1985 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ

Some vehicles may have stalls on the transmission engagement if the engagement occurs more than 20 seconds after the initial cold start-up. The processor is calibrated to add extra fuel for the first 20 seconds after cold engine start-up, to insure proper initial running of the engine. After 20 seconds the cold start fuel strategy begins to remove the extra fuel and at the same time the Idle Control Strategy begins decreasing the idle speed from that of the "Fast Cam" function. The two conditions (after 20 seconds) may produce a condition that results in a stall upon transmission engagement.

The customer should be advised that the recommended start-up procedure is to engage the transmission within 20 seconds after the initial cold start or to wait until the engine temperature is stabilized (approximately 7 minutes).

CAUTION: Vehicle must never be left unattended during warm-up.
