ENGINE KNOCK - 3.8L - COLD
FORD 1985 LTD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 MARQUIS
CALIBRATIONS: All 3.8L CFI built before 9/19/85
Cold knock is caused by spark advance added during warm-up to improve cold driveaway. This will not cause engine damage. This noise will disappear as
engine reaches stabilized operating temperature. Basic engine services are not required to correct this condition. Customer concerns can be serviced by retarding the ignition timing 3~ from the specification.
1. Verify the initial timing. If the timing is at 7~ BTDC and a 3~ retard rod has already been installed in production, no further service actions are required.
2. If initial timing is at 10~ BTDC, install a 3~ retard octane rod in the distributor, part no. E3FZ- 12A335-B.
Authorized Modifications Decal:
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
