Engine - No Start/Rough Idle
86ford23 Article No. 86-3-25NO START/ROUGH IDLE 1.9L EFI - WIRES CROSSED IN THROTTLE POSITION
FORD 1985 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 LYNX
Vehicles exhibiting a no start/rough idle condition and indicating a Code 23 on the Star tester (TPS out of range) may be due to the black/white and dark green/ light green wires being crossed in the (9D930) wiring harness at the 3-way connector for the throttle position sensor (TPS). These vehicles can be corrected as follows:
1. Separate the TPS connector from the (9D930) wiring harness connector.
Figure 22:
NOTE: Figure 22, View B shows proper alignment of wires in the wiring harness connector (9D- 930). If the wires are aligned correctly as shown, then do not proceed with this writeup. (No further action is required.) The Code 23 shown on the Star tester is unlikely the problem in this write-up.
2. Remove the red terminal retainer from the (9D930) wiring harness connector and save.
3. Slide the insulator boot down about 3-4 inches away from the connector.
4. Release the locking tab of the wire terminal (Figure 22, View A) while pulling wire out of the connector. Perform the same operation to the other two wires.
5. Slip the insulator boot off the wires and save.
6. Align the holes in the insulator boot with the holes in the (9D930) wiring harness connector and insert the boot.
7. Reinstall the wires in the (9D930) wiring harness connector, by using the pattern shown in Figure 22, View B.
8. Reinstall the red terminal retainer.
9. Attach wiring harness connector to its mating TPS connector and test on the Star tester.
10. Check vehicle for no start/rough idle condition. If vehicle is o.k., release.
The black/white and dark green/light green wires are crossed in the (9D930) wiring harness at the 3-way connector for the throttle position sensor (TPS).
Vehicles experiencing a no start/rough idle condition, resultant from improperly wired throttle position sensor (TPS), can be corrected as follows:

Disassemble the TPS connector and properly align the crossed wires (black/white and dark green/light green). For further information and location of TPS connector, see Figure 23.
