IDLE ROUGH/STALL - 1.9L - BROKEN WIRE AT CONNECTOR FOR IDLE FUEL SHUT-OFF SOLENOID

FORD 1985 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 LYNX

When a rough idle/stall condition is encountered on the subject vehicles, the following inspection procedure should be used to check and see if the wire lead from the 14290 harness to the idle fuel shut-off solenoid is
broken before performing normal (rough idle/stall) diagnostic procedures.

Figure 11 - Butt Splice Connector Positioning:

Inspection/Repair Procedure

1. Locate the wire and connector (circuit 640 R/Y H - gray connector) leading from the 14290 harness to the idle fuel shut-off solenoid. (See Figure 11)
2. With the ignition switch in the "On" position, wiggle the connector and wire. If wire is fractured, the solenoid can be heard clicking on and off.

3. If solenoid is not activated by wiggling the connector and wire, no further action is required. Proceed with normal (rough idle/stall) diagnostic procedures.

4. If solenoid can be heard clicking, the following steps must be taken to repair the wire lead.

5. Disconnect the wire lead from the solenoid and remove the terminal and wire from the 14290 wire harness connector. (Retain connector.)

6. Cut the tape on the 14290 harness to expose three inches of the wire lead. Cut off fractured wire lead leaving (1) one inch of the wire extending from the harness.

7. Procure from the Parts Department (1) one D8BZ- 144474-C terminal, (1) one E0AZ-14487-B butt splice, and the required length of 16 gauge insulated wire.

8. Crimp new terminal on 16 gauge wire and install in existing connector. Butt splice the wire and connector to the existing 20 gauge wire in the harness.

NOTE: The striped end of the 20 gauge wire in the 14290 harness must be folded back for a proper connection with the 16 gauge buff splice.

9. Position the butt splice connector in the 14290 harness and retape so that the new wire lead exits the harness at the same location of the original wire lead. (See Figure 11)

10. Connect new wire lead to solenoid and check system for proper operation.
